Yixing Teapots

Yixing teapot does indeed has an unusual clay and exceptional pottery methods honed over many centuries. These are classic teapots that have been used since before 1500.

The porous quality and longevity of yixing teapot is astounding. It hs been suggested that the red clay used for the English "brown Betty" may be similar to the clay of "Yixing Teapot" because both have superior heat retention, capability, permeability, and high plasticity.

The differences are that most brown Bettys are glazed and Yixing teapots are not, and brown Bettys are fairly new compared to the centuries-old Yixing Teapots.

The clay is beaten up for up to three days to get as much of the air as possible out of it so that it will be strong and "tight".

Yixing teapots can take firing from 2012 to 2462 degrees Farhenheit and it is not unusual for the heating time to be more than forty hours for a single piece.
