Why Green Tea?

Why not? Green tea has been documented for its ability to increase alertness and stave off diseases. A lot of people are recognizing the health-giving properties of this wonder drink when used consistently all through life.

Studies all over the world all come down to one thing and that is, it is an inexpensive wonder drink with a long range of health benefits no one can ignore.

It contains the largest amounts of potent health promoters called "polyphenols" which are chemically changed during the fermentation of black and oolong tea. The health benefits alone of green tea are overwhelming!

Did you know that one of the health benefits of green tea is that it aids with weight loss? Yup! So, imagine enjoying its wonderful taste and lose weight at the same time without all the side effects of weight loss pills.

If that's not amazing, I don't know what is. :-)

Other than weight loss, one more important health benefit of green tea is the prevention of cancer. In 1987, Hasan Mukhtar, Ph.D., has presented his research on its efficacy as an anti carcinogen. He said that one probable reason is its chemo-preventive agent called polyphenols. These are well documented powerful antioxidants that help control the activity of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable compounds that can destroy cells and are implicated in a host of diseases including cancer.

What about helping you lower your cholesterol? This wonder drink sure does helps with that, too. Researchers have discovered that drinking four to five cups a day might help reduce both your high cholesterol and high blood pressure. British scientists credit flavonoids and vitamins C and E against oxidation of blood cholesterol, one of the main risk factors of heart disease.

Polyphenols are a naturally occurring chemical compounds found in certain fruits and vegetables.

A subgroup of the polyphenols called catechins are particularly powerful disease fighters and potent antioxidants that have a list of health benefits from preventing food spoilage to halting the progression of cancer.

Green tea has an impressive 15-30% of catechin content. Oolong, on the other hand, contains just 8-20% catechins, while black tea only has 3-10%.

What happens during the processing of black and oolong that "kills off" so many catechins? It all begins in the field, as soon as the leaf is plucked from the plant.

The way the leaf is processed greatly affects its catechin content.

Each type is processed quite differently. And it is the processing that takes place that makes a big difference!

The manufacturing methods used in all three not only alter the taste, aroma, and quality of the finished brew, but also change the way it can affect your health.

Here's how teas are processed:

Black Tea - the fresh leaf is withered by exposure to the air, and is broken and left to ferment after picking.

Oolong - is treated similarly, but the withering process is much shorter, resulting in a partially fermented leaf.

Green Tea - the leaf is not fermented at all. Instead, it is steamed immediately after harvesting to stop the fermentation process, then rolled and dried.

So, if you're looking for a caffeine fix, enough to keep you alert but not too much to make you jittery or nervous, this is the way to go.
