Alzheimers

Alzheimer's disease, also known simply as Alzheimers, is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration together with declining activities of daily living and behavioral changes or neuropsychiatric symptoms. It is the most common type of dementia.

Dementia is the fast decline in cognitive function due to damage or disease in the brain beyond what might be anticipated from normal aging.

Classification of the symptoms of dementia may be either reversible or irreversible which may depend on the etiology of the illness. Based on research, less than ten percent of all dementias are reversible. Dementia is a non-specific term surrounding many disease processes, just like how fever as fever as an aspect to many etiologies.

Amnesia or loss of short term memory is one of the most striking early symptoms. Minor forgetfulness can be very much visible during the early stage.

Amnesia is a condition in wherein the memory is disturbed. The causes of amnesia can be classified as either organic or functional.

Organic amnesia causes include damage to the brain, through trauma or disease, or use of certain drugs such as sedatives.Middle-aged to elderly people are frequently to have this most common type of amnesia which is more common in, particularly males, and normally lasts less than twenty-four hours.

In the early stage of Alzheimers, the person may suffer from the said memory loss but on a short term only. They may still recognize their loved ones but may forget some past memories about them. They tend to forget where they placed some of their belongings and they even forget the date and month of the year.

Individuals diagnosed with Alzheimers disease may begin showing some complicated manners. They make a big deal over minor things, they hallucinate, and they have a hard time controlling their anger resulting to become very violent.

As Alzheimers progress, the affected person often begins exhibiting difficult behavior. They often become paranoid, quick to anger, overreact to minor things, suffer from hallucinations, and can even become violent.

Individuals who are diagnosed with Alzheimers disease may attack the following human skills in its advance stage: cognitive (intellectual) impairment extends to the domains of language (aphasia), skilled movements (apraxia), recognition (agnosia), and those functions like decision-making and planning.

It is at this stage that afflicted individuals amy not be able to talk, read nor write. Their memory loss is also progressing thus makes them hard to recognize their loved ones.

Sadly on it’s final stage, people with Alzheimers more often acquire a complete memory loss and might not be able to recognize nobody; even members of the family and friends.

Their motor skills will be greatly affected that they may not walk, talk, and even eat on their own which results to a lot of weight loss.

They usually suffer from series of seizures and spend most of their time sleeping.

In due course it leads to the individual’s death because of the inability of the brain to function well.

Gladly there are available treatments nowadays that help to delay the development of Alzheimers disease. Hopefully there would be a wide variety of treatments and cures to be discovered in the near future.

Scientists are still hoping for possible cure in the nearest future; having a greater knowledge on the human biology and genetic code.
